Orlando Snappers
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Snappers finished Friday with a tie and a loss against the Sanford River Rats, playing to a 3-3 draw in the opener before falling 12-1 in the nightcap.
Orlando entered the doubleheader looking for a sweep, and the opener appeared to present a golden opportunity. In the top of the sixth inning of a 3-3 game, the Snappers loaded the bases with one out and Roberto Alvarez at the plate before lightning halted play.
The situation mirrored what happened on June 13 against the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs. Once again, the game was tied 3-3 in the sixth inning with the bases loaded, one out and Alvarez at the plate when lightning forced play to stop. As with the earlier meeting, the game was ultimately declared a tie.
After a lengthy weather delay, the teams returned for Game 2.
There was little offense to be found for Orlando in the nightcap as Sanford rolled to a 12-1 victory in the seven-inning contest.
The results tightened the Florida Collegiate Summer League standings. Sanford improved to 12-16-1, moving into a tie for fifth place, while Orlando fell to 11-14-2. Despite the setback, the Snappers remained one game out of second place and a half-game ahead of last place.
The two teams conclude their series Saturday night at Sanford Memorial Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
