WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs dropped an 11-6 decision to the first-place Leesburg Lightning on Thursday night at Alfond Stadium after falling into an early hole they could not escape.
Leesburg scored seven runs over the first two innings and totaled 15 hits, building an 8-1 lead through three frames. The Diamond Dawgs responded with a late push, scoring twice in the eighth inning and twice more in the ninth.
Roberto Odor led the offense with two hits, while Osmin Melendez scored twice and Canyon Marcewicz, Jacob Pearl and Nikola Mezzanotte each drove in a run. Despite the late rally, Winter Park fell to 12-15-1 on the season.
The Diamond Dawgs and Lightning will meet again Friday at Pat Thomas Stadium in Leesburg. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Winter Park will look to snap its six-game losing streak.
