SANFORD, Fla. - The Sanford River Rats completed a dominant sweep of the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs on Tuesday, winning both seven-inning games behind outstanding performances on the mound.
In Game 1, a pair of fifth-inning runs were all the support Brock Bracher needed as the right-hander fired a complete-game shutout in Sanford's 2-0 victory.
After four scoreless innings, the River Rats finally broke through in the fifth. Drew Pynes came around to score when Zach Walker reached on an RBI infield single to shortstop, giving Sanford a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Adonys Velez lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Jake Schincariol and double the advantage to 2-0.
Bracher made the lead stand the rest of the way. The right-hander tossed all seven innings, striking out nine batters while holding the Diamond Dawgs scoreless to earn the complete-game shutout.
In Game 2, Sanford's offense wasted no time in the nightcap, scoring eight runs over the first two innings before Chris Keltz and the River Rats pitching staff finished off an 8-0 run-rule victory in four and a half innings.
The River Rats struck for three runs in the opening frame. John Dobkowski put Sanford on the board with an RBI double to right field before Jake Schincariol added a sacrifice fly. Michael Dobkowski capped the inning with an RBI groundout to give the River Rats a 3-0 lead.
Sanford broke the game open in the second. Schincariol drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, and a throwing error allowed Enzo Ercole to score moments later. Adonys Velez then ripped a two-run double to left-center field, and Ethan Beal followed with an RBI single to complete a five-run inning and extend the lead to 8-0.
Making his first start of the season, Chris Keltz was outstanding. The right-hander tossed five scoreless innings, shutting down the Diamond Dawgs and allowing Sanford to complete the run-rule victory.
The wins extended the River Rats' winning streak to three, and they will look to carry that momentum into the upcoming All-Star break. Sanford travels to Winter Garden on Thursday for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
