Early Lead Not Enough in Snappers' Loss to Dawgs
ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Snappers' offensive and defensive struggles continued Tuesday night as the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs rallied for an 8-4 victory at The First Academy.
The loss was Orlando's fourth in its last five games and dropped the Snappers to 9-8-1 on the season.
Orlando jumped out to an early 4-0 lead without recording a hit. The Snappers took advantage of a series of walks, stringing together baserunners and manufacturing four runs in the second inning.
After that, however, the offense stalled.
Winter Park chipped away at the deficit before taking control of the game, scoring eight unanswered runs over five consecutive innings from the fourth through the eighth.
Ryland Happel turned in a strong start for Orlando, working five innings and allowing just one earned run while keeping the Diamond Dawgs in check. His outing gave the Snappers an opportunity to maintain their early advantage.
The game shifted after Happel departed. Winter Park capitalized on opportunities against the Orlando bullpen, while the Snappers were unable to generate enough offense to respond.
Despite the loss, Orlando remains in second place in the Florida Collegiate Summer League standings at 9-8-1. Winter Park improved to 9-9-1 and moved within a half-game of the Snappers.
Orlando returns to action Thursday against the Winter Garden Squeeze at The First Academy. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
