WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs leaned on dominant pitching and timely execution Sunday night, edging the Sanford River Rats 2-1 at Alfond Stadium. The victory improved the Dawgs to 8-9-1 on the season as they held Sanford to just one run despite allowing seven hits.
Winter Park broke through in the third inning when Houston Hosford scored on an RBI groundout by Osmin Melendez, giving the Dawgs a 1-0 lead. An inning later, Winter Park doubled its advantage when a wild pitch allowed Evan Taveras to score, making it 2-0.
The story of the night was the Dawgs' pitching staff. Tyler Mecchella set the tone with 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out eight. Daniel Irizarry followed with 3 1/3 shutout innings to earn the victory, surrendering just one hit.
