ORLANDO, Fla. - The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs experienced both frustration and resilience during Saturday's doubleheader against the Orlando Snappers, dropping the opener 11-0 before battling back to earn a 2-2 tie in the nightcap.
Game 1 belonged entirely to Orlando as the Snappers' offense erupted for 11 runs on 11 hits. Orlando jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning and never looked back, adding runs in every inning through the fifth. Logan Chalk, Ty Kennedy and Luke Mottola all delivered key RBIs early, while Santiago Busot and Cole Goodnoe added back-to-back home runs in the fifth to cap the scoring.
The Diamond Dawgs struggled to generate offense, collecting just four hits. Osmin Melendez, Skyler Jersey, Jake Biaggi and Ethan Koller each recorded a hit, but Winter Park was unable to break through against Orlando pitching.
After a difficult start to the day, the Dawgs responded with a much stronger effort in Game 2.
The Snappers again struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the opening inning on a two-run single from Ty Kennedy. This time, however, Winter Park's pitching staff settled in and kept Orlando off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Presley Woodson delivered a quality outing, allowing two runs over 4.2 innings while striking out eight before Kaiden Perez came on to record the final out. Together, the duo gave the Dawgs a chance to climb back into the game.
Winter Park's offense answered in the fourth inning when Clay Mitchell, who finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, drove in Colton Musgrave to cut the deficit to one. An inning later, the Dawgs completed the comeback as Roberto Odor lined an RBI single down the left-field line, scoring Eric Entrekin and tying the game at 2-2.
Odor finished with two hits and an RBI, while Musgrave doubled and scored a run as Winter Park collected eight hits in the contest.
Neither team could push across a go-ahead run late, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie after lightning in the area forced play to be suspended.
The Dawgs enter Sunday with a 7-5-1 record and sit third in the FCSL standings.
Winter Park returns to action Monday for a two-game set against the Winter Garden Squeeze. Game 1 is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Alfond Stadium on the campus of Rollins College.
