Lightning Dominate River Rats in Seven-Inning Shutout
LEESBURG, Fla. - Leesburg's pitching staff allowed just three hits and struck out 11 batters Saturday night as the Lightning cruised to a 12-0 victory over the Sanford River Rats at Pat Thomas Stadium.
The Lightning delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, pairing dominant pitching with an offense that consistently pressured Sanford's defense and capitalized on scoring opportunities.
Ethan Priest set the tone on the mound, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing two hits and striking out five. Despite issuing four walks, the right-hander worked out of trouble repeatedly to keep the River Rats off the scoreboard.
Andre Bilbao Jr. followed with a scoreless fifth inning before Miguel Figueroa earned the win with a clean sixth that included two strikeouts. Cody Clymer closed out the combined shutout by striking out three of the four batters he faced in the seventh inning.
Offensively, Leesburg wasted little time taking control. The Lightning capitalized on walks, errors and aggressive baserunning to build an early lead before breaking the game open in the middle innings.
KT Thompson continued his torrid start to the season, reaching base three times while going 2-for-3 with four runs scored, an RBI and three stolen bases. Charlie Keller added another productive night, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
Preston Murphy doubled and drove in two runs, while Marcello Cortale contributed a double and an RBI. Turner Gross reached base three times and scored twice, and Dylan Green, Hudson Reed, Jack Waddingham and Ledger Pleasant all crossed the plate.
Leesburg finished with 12 runs on nine hits, stole five bases and took advantage of four Sanford errors. The Lightning scored six runs through the first four innings before adding four more in the fifth and two in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Sanford never mounted a serious threat, collecting just three hits and leaving seven runners on base.
With the victory, Leesburg improved to 7-1 on the season. The Lightning will enjoy an off day Sunday before traveling to face the Winter Garden Squeeze on Monday at 6 p.m. at Horizon High School.
