Dawgs Fall to Leesburg in Season Opener
The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs came up short on Thursday night, falling to the Leesburg Lightning, 7-2.
The Dawgs struggled to generate consistent offense early, allowing Leesburg to build momentum and take control of the game. The Lightning opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when a wild throw allowed a runner to score from second base. In the second inning, a solo home run by Preston Murphy extended Leesburg's lead to 2-0.
Winter Park showed flashes at the plate and worked to keep the game within reach. Jake Biaggi delivered an RBI double in the fourth inning, and a wild pitch in the sixth inning allowed Osmin Melendez to score, tying the game at 2-2.
Entering the eighth inning tied, the Diamond Dawgs remained within striking distance before the Lightning broke the game open with a five-run frame.
Leesburg started the rally when Marcello Cortale delivered an RBI single to left field, bringing home Andon Gray and giving the Lightning a 3-2 lead. A wild pitch moments later allowed Gabriel Campos to score while Cortale and Kaden Thompson advanced into scoring position, making it a 4-2 game.
The Lightning continued to capitalize on their opportunities as Hudson Reed lined a single up the middle, driving in both Cortale and Thompson to push the advantage to 6-2. Later in the inning, Jack Waddingham added a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Reed and capped the five-run outburst.
Despite battling throughout the contest, the Diamond Dawgs could not recover from the late offensive explosion. Winter Park kept the game close through seven innings but struggled to contain the Lightning offense in the decisive eighth.
The Diamond Dawgs will look to bounce back in their next matchup as they continue the early portion of the Florida Collegiate Summer League season with another game against the Leesburg Lightning at Pat Thomas Stadium.
