Snappers Fall Victim to Suns' Offensive Surge
ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Snappers were run-ruled Monday night, falling 12-1 to the DeLand Suns in seven innings at The First Academy.
It was a difficult night for Orlando, as a scoreless game through two innings quickly unraveled into a mid-game surge from DeLand's offense.
The Suns broke through in the fourth inning with three runs, highlighted by a two-run home run from Joshua Vinciguerra that put DeLand ahead 3-0. Orlando responded in the bottom half when Luke Mottola singled to drive in Colby Brewington, but it would be the Snappers' only run of the night.
From there, DeLand controlled the game, scoring in each of the final five innings and producing multiple crooked-number frames to pull away.
Starter Christian Helmers was sharp early, working perfect first and second innings, but ran into trouble in the third. Defensive miscues compounded the damage, as two Orlando errors helped extend DeLand's rallies. The Snappers' bullpen was unable to slow the momentum as the Suns finished with nine hits and six walks.
Orlando's offense was limited to a handful of opportunities after the fourth inning and could not generate sustained pressure against DeLand pitching.
The loss dropped the Snappers to 5-3 on the season, while the Suns improved to 2-5.
Orlando now turns its attention to a road matchup Tuesday night against the first-place Leesburg Lightning. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
