WINTER PARK, Fla. (July 9, 2011)  – The Sanford River Rats fell 10-3 to the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs at Alfond Stadium Saturday night.

Winter Park (14-6-1) scored their 10 runs in just two innings, during the sixth and eighth frames.

Sanford (8-14-1) scored first after Alex Mendez (South Florida) came home on a shortstop error. Ryan Woodrey (Nova Southeastern) notched another run in the sixth on an Austin Liput (USC Upstate) single to put the Rats up 2-0.

Winter Park responded in a big way in the home half of the sixth, however, putting up six runs. After loading the bases, Michael Danner (Polk State College) had an RBI walk for the Dawgs, plating Brad Hutton (Ohio State). B.J. Zimmerman (State College of Florida) and Austin Chubb (Florida Southern) scored on an Alex Cruz (Georgia Tech) single. Danner scored on a Ryne Knuth (Polk State College) single to make it 4-2. A Sanford defensive miscue allowed Cruz and Knuth to score, making it a 6-2 ballgame.

Sanford cut the lead to three in the top of the eighth as Woodrey came home on a Liput sacrifice fly. Despite having the bases loaded, Sanford could not capitalize as a double play quickly ended the inning for the Rats.

Cruz scored a second run for Winter Park in the eighth on a passed ball. Ruben Marrero (Cowley College) scored on a Zimmerman single to make it 8-3. A Sanford error allowed Hutton to come home and Zimmerman got his second run to close the scoring at 10-3.

Sanford’s next game is on the road against the Leesburg Lightning (15-7) at Pat Thomas Stadium. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.

Neil Tredray (Valencia College)
