ORLANDO (July 6, 2011) - A pair of Winter Haven home runs were too much as the Orlando Freedom fell to the Loggerheads 11-3 in the mid-week contest at Orel Hershiser Field.
The Loggerheads got off to an early lead grabbing two runs in the first and one in the second to take a three run lead. The Freedom responded in the bottom of the second putting up two runs on a pair of hits, bringing home Chris Suto (Lake Sumter CC) and Matt Frank (Jacksonville).
The Freedom were shut down for a majority of the last seven innings, grabbing just one more run in the eighth, as AJ Mackey (Gulf Coast CC) drove in his second run of the night. Mackey led the Freedom offense with three hits to go with the two runs batted in. Lawrence Pardo (Santa Fe) added two hits of his own.
The story of the night, however, was Loggerhead starting pitcher Bryan Poland (Benedictine College). Poland pitched seven strong innings, fanning four, while walking only two and scattering eight hits. The two runs in the second were his only blemishes.
Kevin Clements (Trinity University) picked up a solo home run in the second to lead off the inning. Clements, Burgess and Sam Halpern (Barry) each picked up three hits to lead the Loggerheads. Though the three led the offensive onslaught, every Loggerhead hitter reached base at least once, with eight hitters either scoring or knocking in a run.
The Freedom get a chance to get back on track Thursday (July 7), on the road, against the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
