WINTER PARK, Fla. (June 19, 2011) - The Winter Haven Loggerheads scored the lone run of the ball game in the first inning, as they shutout the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs 1-0.
Diamond Dawgs (8-3) starting pitcher Chad Modomo (West Virginia Wesleyan College) was tagged with the loss, despite throwing 6 2/3 innings, giving up one run, and striking out four.
“If Chad can give us that every time out, I think we’ll be okay,” said Head Coach Kevin Davidson.
Modomo’s counterpart, Peter Miller (Florida State University), tossed five innings of one hit baseball while striking out seven.
“Miller did a great job,” said Davidson. “He’s the best arm we’ve seen all season.”
In the top of the first inning, Andrew Sterling (Dickinson College) led the game off with a walk. Sterling advanced to third on a Justin Burgess (Montevallo) single to left field, and scored on a Sean O’Brien (Florida State University) single.
That run proved to be enough, as Winter Park had just four base runners reach second base in the entire game and got just three hits in the shutout loss.
However, neither team came close to scoring again, with the exception of the seventh inning for Winter Haven (6-6). Reed Reznicek (Indiana University) came on in relief for Modomo and pitched himself out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Diamond Dawgs within striking distance in the late goings.
Winter Park will hit the road as they face the DeLand Suns on Tuesday, June 21 at The Villages. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
