WINTER PARK, Fla. (June 16, 2011) – The Winter Haven Loggerheads suffered a 7-0 loss to the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs Thursday night at Alfond Stadium at Harper-Shepherd Field.
Winter Haven connected on five hits, while committing two errors. The loss drops the Loggerheads to 4-6 on the season.
Knocking in hits for the Loggerheads were Sam Halpern (Barry), Chris Pagliarulo (Boston College), Mike Muha (Saint Joseph’s), Sean O’Grady (Benedictine College), and Kevin Clements (Trinity).
Loggerheads starting pitcher Jacob Newberry (High Point) was charged with the loss tossing five full innings. Newberry recorded five strikeouts, walked two, and gave up four earned runs.
Winter Haven gave up three runs in the first two frames, but managed to keep the Dawgs scoreless through the next three innings. In the top of the sixth, Newberry faced three batters to load the bases. Abilene Christian’s Brady Rodriguez replaced Newberry on the mound and gave up a bases clearing triple to Dustin Demuth (Indiana University) to give Winter Park the 6-0 lead.
Winter Park capped off the scoring on the next at-bat as pinch-hitter Tyler Rocklein (State College of Florida) drove in Demuth on a sac fly.
Diamond Dawg starter Jeremy Strawn (State College of Florida) earned the win also recording five punch-outs, giving up three hits.
The Loggerheads continue their four-game road swing as they head to Sanford to face the River Rats on Friday, June 17. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
